Design-for-recycling (D4R) – state of play

The article discusses measures for waste prevention and management, with a particular focus on ‘design for recycling’ (D4R). More than 100 separate D4R guidelines in Europe are evaluated for their effectiveness and harmonised. D4R is implemented at both a policymaking and technical level, with the former concentrating on the transposition of guidelines into pieces of legislation while the latter focuses on specific requirements for materials or products. There is a particular interest here in easily implemented improvements to recyclability, especially in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.
