DEinternational is organizing a specific German-Kazakh working group „Waste and recycling management in Kazakhstan“. In addition to local experts and representatives of the state sector and international organizations, technical experts from Germany will be also involved. The aim of the project was to improve the waste management of Kazakhstan through the cooperation of the local ministries and German experts who could actively implement their environmental technologies on the local market. During the working group meetings, the biggest industry problems were identified, which served as the basis for the development of a pilot project.

During the project a dialogue was established between DEInternational, the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources and German experts and companies. The waste management in Germany is at the highest level compared to Kazakhstan and other countries. That gives German companies the opportunity to implement their "green" strategy and a national waste management system with high recycling rates and to support the Kazakhstan with knowledge, technologies and experiences by considering modern environmental protection standards.

The project included 3 stages:

• Establishment of a specific German-Kazakh working group (analysis and presentation of waste management problems in Kazakhstan, inspection of target objects and development of suggestions for process optimization
• Concept development (environmental project) for a selected twin city (selection criteria will be determined more precisely by the working group)
• Implementation of a virtual workshop week for an informative exchange of practical experience on the main topic of "innovative waste management technologies"

Subsequent the working group meetings, the development of the field of waste and recycling management in Kazakhstan was supported by German experts and market players through the start of a specific German-Kazakh working group. The working group also identified actual chances for German companies (e.g. project funding, entry into the market). This strengthend German-Kazakh cooperation in this area. The virtual workshop week intensified the information exchange and networking and sharpen the focus in the society of Kazakhstan.
