With a dynamic economic growth of approx. 6% in the 8 years before the corona crisis, the electricity demand in the Philippines has risen steadily in recent years. Electricity generation from renewable energy sources also increased, which, according to government plans, should make up 35% of the energy mix by 2030.

In recent years, private companies in particular have expanded the infrastructure for their own electricity generation and backup power systems using renewable energy technologies as alternatives, such as solar installations. In large cities and industrial parks, this is done using roof-top systems. Due to a limited feed-in of excess electricity into the country’s grid, intermediate storage options play an important role to avoid wasting generated energy. The application of storage technology in the Philippines is advancing. German hydrogen and fuel cell technologies can offer an additional solution here. The project evaluated local framework conditions, interest, and acceptance of green hydrogen technologies through discussions with representatives from various industries and relevant ministries. Information events were intended to connect important players in the field from Germany and the Philippines to get potential pilot projects off the ground.

The project contributes to a number of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), primarily goal 7: affordable and clean energy. At the same time goal 8: decent work and economic growth, 10: reduced inequalities, 11: sustainable cities and communities, and goal 13: climate action were addressed.
