The initial situation
More than a third of Tanzania's population has no access to safe drinking water, which poses immense challenges for the country's water management. An ailing infrastructure, limited water resources in cities and salinated groundwater worsen this situation. Droughts also mean that water is in short supply in cities and has to be rationed.
The approach
German GreenTech companies are to promote the sustainable development of the water and wastewater infrastructure together with Tanzanian partners as part of the “German-Tanzanian GreenTech Innovation Program” of the AHK Eastern Africa. In particular, sustainable use in industry and agriculture is to be ensured. This enables German companies to work with local actors to develop appropriate solutions that meet the challenges in the water and wastewater sector.
The objectives and measures
In order to achieve this objective, investments are necessary in training and further development, the international exchange of expertise and infrastructure.
The project comprises three phases:
1. German-Tanzanian Water and Waste Water Management Workshop
Introduction of a blended learning course for the further development of Tanzanian experts in the area of water and wastewater management. The existing IWAMI (International Water Managers for Industries) teaching concept will be expanded to incorporate market-specific content, translated for the Tanzanian market and taught in online and face-to-face training phases.
2. German-Tanzanian GreenTech Innovation Week
Development and expansion of a network of the German-Tanzanian water and wastewater industry by conducting workshops, special events, case studies and group discussions for public and private actors, institutions, experts, innovative start-ups and entrepreneurs from both countries.
3. German-Tanzanian GreenTech Working Group
Formation of a working group of German and Tanzanian actors to develop project ideas and implement cooperation models.
