The initial situation

Due to limited water resources and a shortage of water worsened by climate change, seawater desalination in Egypt is an indispensable method for resolving water supply challenges. The CANOPUS project works with an innovative integrated concept to make seawater desalination more environmentally friendly.

The approach

The sustainable concentrate management applied in the project can considerably reduce environmental impacts such as salination of groundwater, pollution of the oceans and increased soil salinity. The increase in water yield and the intelligent control system also reduce the specific energy requirement of the plant. The use of renewable energy also minimises the CO2 footprint.

The objectives and measures

The core of the project is a demonstration plant for modular desalination. This combines various methods of maximising the water yield with low energy consumption, minimising the concentrate volume and partly recovering the remaining salts.

Various locations and their conditions are being examined with local partners and other relevant stakeholders to enable a representative introduction of the concept on the one hand and to implement an efficient and visible demonstration on the other. The demonstration plant will be designed, operated and optimised based on the data collected in compliance with the on-site requirements and potential and, if necessary, further adapted to local conditions. This is intended to ensure that the technology concept is a convincing reference for a sustainable desalination plant in the region. The implementation of a conference, a workshop and the training of operating personnel for the operation of the plant even beyond the project duration are also elementary project components.
